How to Make Your Period Less Painful
by Balancing Your Emotional Chakra
If you’re someone who dreads your period every month, doubled over with cramps, feeling emotionally drained, or wondering why your body seems to go to war with you, you’re not alone.
Painful periods can feel like a cruel mystery. Not to mention, it’s incredibly frustrating when your doctor says everything looks “normal, just take over the counter pain killers”. But you’re the one who’s has to deal with intense pain along with a slew of other symptoms every single month just for being born a female, it seems so unfair.
🩸 Here’s the thing: painful periods aren’t just about your uterus or your physical body. They’re often your body’s way of communicating deeper energetic and emotional imbalances. Once you understand the emotional chakra behind your womb, you’ll be able to work with your body instead of fighting against it and everything changes.
Let’s talk about how to make your period less painful — and how balancing your sacral chakra (your emotional chakra) can be a total game changer.
What Causes Painful Period Cramps?
We’ve all heard the usual list of painful period causes:
🧪Hormonal imbalances (like excess estrogen or low progesterone)
🔥Uterine inflammation
⚠️ Endometriosis or fibroids
🧘♀️ Tight pelvic muscles
🍟Poor diet or lack of movement
And yes — those medical reasons are real and worth understanding. But they’re not the full story.
The Real Root is energetic imbalance and every single physical, mental or emotional symptom you suffer with first begins at an energetic level.
Think of your body like a pot of water on the stove. When emotional pressure, stress, or stuck energy builds up under the surface without being released, the heat just keeps rising. At first, it just simmers. But over time, that lid starts rattling and eventually, it boils over. That overflow? That’s when you start seeing physical symptoms.
Cramps, fatigue, anxiety, skin flare-ups; whatever your body’s go-to symptom is it’s not the root problem, it’s the spillover. The core of the problem started long before that, buried in your energy and emotions, quietly bubbling away.
Meet the Sacral Chakra — Your Emotional & Womb Energy Centre
🟠 The sacral chakra (also called Svadhisthana) is your second energy centre, located in your lower abdomen — right around your womb and hips. It’s deeply connected to your feminine essence, your ability to feel, create, express, and flow and is responsible for the health of your reproductive organs.
When your sacral chakra is open and balanced, your period often reflects that. There’s less tension, less resistance, and more flow — literally and emotionally. PMS symptoms are greatly reduced because your emotions are able to naturally flow and periods are less painful.
Each of your 7 chakras are deeply connected to different parts of your body and mind so if you suffer from painful periods and you suffer with 1 or more of the symptoms on the list below, you most definitely have a block in your sacral chakra.
Symptoms of a blocked Sacral Chakra:
🤕 Painful period cramps
🩸Bloating or heavy bleeding
🔄 Hormonal ups and downs
❌ Lack of sex drive
🎨 Creative blocks
🌧 Feeling emotionally overwhelmed or emotionally flat
😞 Shame or guilt around your body or sexuality
🚫 Difficulty setting boundaries or expressing your needs
🫤 Feeling low or bad about yourself/low self-esteem
🚻 Frequent UTI’s or problems with the bladder or kidneys
🤢Digestive issues
An open sacral chakra allows energy and blood to flow freely. A blocked sacral chakra holds onto pain, trauma, and emotional pressure, which can manifest as physical pain around your cycle.
Women with balanced sacral chakras often report their periods feel more like a gentle wave than a painful flood — still there, but not distressing.
How Emotions Get Stuck in the Sacral and Cause Blocks
Your sacral chakra is where your emotional energy lives and moves. When it’s clear and balanced, your emotions flow through you naturally — you feel things, process them, and move on. But when you don’t allow yourself to fully feel, that energy gets stuck. And stuck energy is what leads to blocks.
This is super common for people who suppress their emotions — even if they don’t realise they’re doing it. You might numb out instead. Whether it’s weed🍃, alcohol🍷, endless scrolling📱, overworking💻, binge eating🍩, people-pleasing, or zoning out with Netflix... those emotions don’t disappear. They just get buried deeper into your body.
And when they’re not acknowledged or released, they get stored in your sacral chakra — building tension and turning into symptoms like painful periods, hormonal chaos, emotional flatness, or even pelvic pain and digestive issues.
Another big reason people end up with a blocked sacral chakra is emotional conditioning. If you were told things like “just get on with it,” “stop being so sensitive,” or “no one wants to hear you cry,” then you likely learned from a young age to ignore or dismiss your emotions.
⛔That doesn't make you broken — it makes you human. But those unprocessed emotions didn’t just vanish. They settled into your energy body and created blocks.
That’s why it’s so important to feel your emotions as they come up. And I don’t mean screaming at your partner because you’re angry or crying for hours on the bathroom floor (though hey, sometimes that’s needed). I mean gently noticing how the emotion feels in your body.
🌬️🧘♀️When something triggers you, instead of spiralling into thoughts or trying to push it away, pause. Ask yourself: Where do I feel this? What’s the actual sensation? Breathe into it. Sit with it.
Let it move. That’s what emotional flow actually looks like — and it’s one of the most powerful ways to unblock your sacral chakra and start shifting your symptoms.

How to Make Your Periods Less Painful:
5 Sacral Chakra Practices to Try
Here are a few powerful ways to open your sacral chakra and ease painful periods naturally — no expensive tools required.
1. Womb-Connected Breathwork in a warm bath
💧This one is a double whammy… Water is the element of the sacral chakra and so any activities involving water will help to open and balance it.
🛁Run yourself a nice warm bath and place both hands on your lower belly. As you breathe in, imagine sending soft, warm breath into your womb. Exhale with a sigh and let go of any tension or pain.
🫧Do this for 5–10 rounds. You’re not just calming your body — you’re regulating your nervous system too, which directly affects cramping. & if you don’t have access to a bath, doing the breath work alone is still poweful.
2. Journal your Emotions
Because the sacral chakra is your emotional centre, unprocessed feelings can build up and show up as period pain. Journaling is a powerful way to release those trapped emotions — it gets the feelings out of your body and onto the page. You’re not just thinking about how you feel, you’re clearing space inside yourself.
Often, the moment you finish writing, you feel lighter, clearer, and more in tune with what’s really going on beneath the surface.

3.. Sacral Chakra Affirmations
Say these aloud or silently to yourself while holding your hand over your lower belly. Feel free to use your own affirmations that make you feel calm, empowered, joyful and free.
“I release what no longer serves me — physically, emotionally, and energetically.”
“My cycle is a natural rhythm, and I allow it to flow with ease.”
“It is safe for me to feel, release, and heal.”
“I honour my emotions and feel them fully”
4. Pelvic Hip Circles
🟠Move your hips in slow circles, either standing or seated. This gently activates and opens the sacral area, releasing tension and encouraging energy flow around your womb.
Try it for 1–2 minutes, especially leading up to or during your period. As simple as this sounds, by doing this you are actively allowing the energy in this area to begin to move so the energy can start flowing again.
5. Gentle Hip-Opening Yoga
🧘Child’s pose, butterfly stretch, and reclining goddess pose are perfect for softening pelvic tension. Move slowly and breathe deeply, letting your body tell you what it needs. This exercise has a similar effect as the hip circles as it helps to open up the sacral chakra area and allow the energy to begin to flow freely.
